Oily Skin: Control the Shine Without Destroying Your Barrier
Oily skin in Indian heat feels like a losing battle — face washed at 9, shining by 11. The instinct is to wash harder and more often. That instinct backfires. Oil control is about calming production signals and absorbing smartly, not declaring war on your own skin.
Why your skin makes this much oil
Sebum output is mostly set by genetics and hormones — androgens keep male sebaceous glands productive well into the 30s. Heat and humidity raise output further, which is why the same face behaves in Delhi in June and rebels in December less. Oil itself is not the enemy: it protects and moisturises. The problems are what come with excess — shine, enlarged-looking pores, blackheads and a film that mixes with dust through an Indian commute.
The over-washing trap
Washing three or four times a day with a strong foaming cleanser strips the barrier, and irritated skin often responds with more oil and more sensitivity — the mid-day grease returns faster. Two gentle washes a day is the ceiling for most men (plus a rinse or gentle wash after a sweaty workout). If your skin feels squeaky and tight after washing, your cleanser is your problem. Switch to a mild gel, use lukewarm water, and give it two weeks before concluding it "doesn’t work".
Ingredients that actually help
Niacinamide (around 4-5% in serums or moisturisers) is the best-studied gentle option — over 4-8 weeks it visibly reduces oiliness and improves pore appearance for many men. Salicylic acid, being oil-soluble, gets inside pores and clears the mix of oil and dead skin behind blackheads; 2% in a cleanser or leave-on, used a few times a week, is enough. Clay masks once a week absorb surface oil for a cleaner look on a specific day. Retinoids (like adapalene, at night) slowly normalise the pore itself — that is the longer game.
A workable routine for Indian summers
Morning: gentle gel cleanser, light gel moisturiser (skip only if truly uncomfortable — dehydrated oily skin gets oilier), matte or gel sunscreen. Mid-day: blot with tissue or rinse with plain water and pat dry; do not re-wash with cleanser. Night: cleanser, niacinamide or salicylic (alternate nights if using both), light moisturiser. Shave after a warm shower with a single clean blade direction-wise to reduce bumps on oily, acne-prone skin. Wash pillowcases twice a week in summer — oil plus dust is acne fuel.
Pores: the honest part
Pores do not open and close, and no product shrinks them permanently. They look bigger when full of oil and debris and when sun damage loosens the skin around them. Consistent salicylic acid, sun protection and oil control make them look smaller — that is the achievable goal. If blackheads keep returning despite 8 weeks of this routine, a dermatologist can do extractions safely and check whether what you call blackheads are actually sebaceous filaments (normal, permanent structures that should not be squeezed out).
What to look for
- Niacinamide 4-5% serum or gel moisturiser — Daily use, morning or night. Give it 6-8 weeks.
- Salicylic acid 2% cleanser — For blackhead-prone zones; a few times a week is enough for most.
Common questions
Should oily skin skip moisturiser?
Usually no. Skipping it leaves the barrier dry on the surface while oil flows underneath, and skin often compensates with more oil. A light gel moisturiser is the middle path — try two weeks before deciding.
