Skincare for Beginners: A 3-Step Routine That Works at Every Budget
Skincare looks complicated because brands earn more when it looks complicated. For most men, three steps done daily beat ten steps done for a week. Here is the bare routine, why each step exists, and what it should cost at three budget levels.
Step 1: cleanser, twice a day
A face wash removes the day’s oil, sweat, dust and sunscreen so they do not sit in your pores overnight. Wash morning and night with lukewarm water, about 60 seconds, no scrubbing. Oily skin does well with a gel cleanser, sometimes with salicylic acid; dry or sensitive skin needs a gentle, non-foaming one. If your face feels tight and squeaky after washing, the cleanser is too harsh — that feeling is damage, not cleanliness. Budget: ₹200-450 for 2-3 months of use.
Step 2: moisturiser, matched to your skin
Moisturiser holds water in your skin and keeps the barrier — your skin’s brick wall — intact. A weak barrier is behind a lot of sensitivity, flaking and breakouts. Oily skin: a light gel with ingredients like niacinamide or hyaluronic acid. Dry skin: a cream with ceramides or glycerin. Apply on slightly damp skin, morning and night. Budget: ₹250-600. You do not need separate day and night creams; that is mostly packaging.
Step 3: sunscreen, every morning
This is the step that changes how your skin ages. Sun exposure drives tanning, pigmentation, early wrinkles and worsens acne marks. Use SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum, as the last step every morning — yes, on cloudy days and yes, indoors near windows. Two-finger length of product for face and neck. If you are outdoors, reapply every 2-3 hours. Budget: ₹300-600 for a tube that should last about a month with correct quantity. This is where your money does the most work.
The three budget tiers
Starter (about ₹700-1,200 total): a gentle gel cleanser, a basic gel/cream moisturiser, SPF 30 sunscreen — pharmacy and Indian D2C shelves are full of these. Mid (₹1,500-2,500): better sunscreen texture you will actually enjoy wearing, a ceramide moisturiser, salicylic cleanser for oily skin. Higher budgets buy nicer textures and packaging, not a different league of results. Consistency with a ₹1,000 routine outperforms a ₹5,000 routine used on Sundays.
What to skip for now
Skip the toner, essence, sheet masks, face scrubs with gritty particles, and the 7-step layering you saw in a video. Add only one thing later, and only for a specific problem: vitamin C or niacinamide for pigmentation, adapalene for acne (that one deserves its own reading). Introduce any new active alone, use it for 6-8 weeks before judging, and stop anything that burns or breaks you out badly. Simple, boring, daily — that is the whole secret.
What to look for
- Gel cleanser (oily/combination skin) — Look for gentle surfactants; salicylic acid version if blackheads are a problem.
- Ceramide/glycerin moisturiser — Cream for dry skin, gel-cream for oily skin.
- SPF 30+ PA+++ sunscreen — The single highest-value product in the routine.
Common questions
I have never used anything. Where do I start this week?
Buy the cleanser and sunscreen first and use them daily for two weeks, then add the moisturiser. Starting everything on one day makes it impossible to know which product suits you.
Do men need different skincare than women?
Mostly no — skin biology is the same; men tend to have oilier, thicker skin and shaving irritation. The same three steps apply; product choice follows your skin type, not the "for men" label.
