Hair Oil Myths: What Oil Can Do, What It Cannot, and What Actually Helps
Every Indian household has a hair oil story — a grandfather with a full head of hair and a bottle of something. Oil is a good conditioner with centuries of sensible use behind it. But the claim that it regrows hair lost to genetics is marketing, and believing it delays the things that actually work.
What oil genuinely does
Oil coats the hair shaft, reduces friction and protein loss during washing, adds shine and makes hair less likely to snap. Coconut oil is the best-studied: its small molecules penetrate the shaft and reduce protein loss from both damaged and undamaged hair in lab studies. A pre-wash oil massage also feels great and the massage itself briefly increases scalp blood flow. All of this is about the hair you already have — its texture, strength and appearance.
What oil cannot do
Genetic hair loss happens inside the follicle: DHT shrinks it over time until it stops producing visible hair. No oil applied on the surface changes that hormone process, unblocks a miniaturised follicle or revives a dead one. If oils regrew pattern baldness, the generations of Indian men oiling faithfully would not have gone bald — many did, bottle in hand. Oil also cannot fix deficiency or thyroid-driven shedding; those need blood tests and medicine.
Where oil can backfire
Leaving heavy oil on a dandruff-prone scalp for days feeds the Malassezia yeast that drives seborrheic dermatitis — flaking and itching get worse, and inflamed scalps shed more. Strongly perfumed or mixed "herbal" oils also cause contact allergies in some men: new itching or a rash after starting an oil means stop it. The practical pattern: oil 30-60 minutes before a wash, then wash it out properly. Sleeping in oil for days is a habit, not a treatment.
What actually helps, by cause
For genetic loss: dermatologist-prescribed treatment (topical minoxidil, sometimes finasteride) started early, while follicles are still alive. For shedding after illness or stress: time, protein and correcting deficiencies. For dandruff-driven fall: anti-fungal shampoo used correctly. For breakage: gentler handling, less heat, fewer chemical treatments. Notice that none of these is a bottle — each matches a cause. That matching is the entire game in hair loss.
The honest way to keep the ritual
Keep oiling if you enjoy it — as conditioning, not as medicine. Coconut or a light oil before washing, a few minutes of massage, then shampoo it out. Spend the savings from skipping "regrowth" oils on a blood panel once and a dermatologist visit once. That combination will tell you more about your hair in a week than a year of testimonials in oil advertisements.
Common questions
What about onion oil or rosemary oil for regrowth?
Rosemary oil has one small study comparing it favourably with 2% minoxidil over 6 months — interesting, but a single small trial, and 2% is not the standard 5% strength. Onion juice has one small study for patchy hair loss (alopecia areata), not male pattern loss. Neither is proven for the receding hairline most men are worried about.
