Sunscreen in January? Here's why, honestly.

Clouds, snow and office windows — what winter does to your skin.

THE MYTH

“No sun, no sunscreen needed”

Winter weakens UVB, the burning ray. But UVA — the aging, tanning ray — stays strong all year round.

THE SCIENCE

UVA passes clouds and glass

Up to 80% of UV rays get through cloud cover, and UVA crosses window glass. A desk by the window counts.

THE SNOW FACTOR

Snow reflects up to 80% of UV

Sand reflects ~15%, water ~10% — snow nearly doubles exposure. Ski trips burn faces fast and hard.

WHAT IT PREVENTS

Wrinkles, spots, uneven tone

Most visible skin aging is photo-aging. Daily SPF is the cheapest anti-aging step that actually exists.

THE DOSE

Two-finger length for face + neck

Squeeze sunscreen along your index and middle fingers — that's the amount SPF ratings are based on.

THE ROUTINE

Last step of the morning

Moisturizer first, sunscreen last, 15 minutes before heading out. Reapply every 2 hours outdoors.

WHICH ONE

SPF 30+, broad spectrum

Look for “broad spectrum” and SPF 30–50. A moisturizer with SPF is fine for office days, used generously.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Winter sun still ages skin

UVA doesn't take the season off. The complete sunscreen guide covers types, amounts and reapplying.
